2018 smart phone 3D sensing penetration or 13.1%, Apple is the main adopter

March 7th, Tuoba Industrial Research Institute released a report predicting that the global smartphone 3D sensing penetration rate will increase from 2.1% in 2017 to 13.1% this year. Apple is still the main adopter of 3D sensing devices. .

In 2018, the total number of smartphones equipped with 3D sensing modules in the world will reach 197 million, of which iPhone will occupy 165 million. In addition, the market value of 3D sensing modules in 2018 is estimated to be approximately 5.12 billion U.S. dollars, of which the proportion contributed by the iPhone is as high as 84.5%. It is estimated that by 2020, the overall output value will reach 10.85 billion U.S. dollars, and the compound annual growth rate between 2018 and 2020 will reach 45.6%.

Although the penetration of 3D sensing devices has increased, the technical threshold for its production still exists.

According to industry analysts, there are currently three major technical thresholds for the production of 3D sensing modules. First, high-efficiency VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) components are difficult to produce, and the current average photoelectric conversion efficiency is only 30%.

Second, the experimental design of the necessary components of the structured light technology and the CIS module of the infrared light lens all require extremely high technical knowledge.

Third, the production process of 3D sensing modules needs to consider the problem of thermal expansion and contraction, and increase the difficulty of module assembly. These factors have caused the production yield of 3D sensing modules to remain low at this stage.

Although some manufacturers actively expand production in response to market demand, the overall yield of VCSELs is still relatively low.

Tuobai Industrial Institute believes that there is a patent agreement between Lucentum and Apple, a major supplier of VCSELs. This allows the Android camp to ignore VCSELs and choose EEL (edge-fired laser) if it wants to follow up in a short period of time. However, the EEL's photoelectric conversion efficiency is poor and the cost is high. This will make the Android camp's 3D sensing solution still hard to compete with Apple in terms of efficiency and cost.
